You can never have too many men, so I decided to add a few more. They are all former NBA basketball players. So the ladies won't have any problems with height.
First up is Shaquille (Shaq) O'Neal. These figures are made by a company called Starting Lineup.
They did a really good job capturing a young Shaq. I met the real Shaq in person a few months ago. He's pretty down to earth and really funny.
These figures have decent movement, although they aren't completely articulated. The arms and legs are bendable at the joints, and the wrists are articulated.
Next up is Grant Hill.
They did a decent job on his likeness, but I don't know why they started his hairline so far back. I may have to fix that.
My third and final basketball player is Allen Iverson.
This doesn't look anything like Allen Iverson. That's okay. He's a little cutie pie, despite the open mouth.
Here is a picture of the first basketball player I bought, Juwan Howard. This will give you an idea of size comparison.
So an upcoming story will feature these four players doing an exhibition game, with Michael Jordan as their coach.
Your new guys are nice.
ReplyDeleteStarting Lineup usually does a decent job of capturing the likeness of sports figures. I have Michael Jordan and a Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier set by SL.
I look forward to your first story featuring these guys.
dbg
DBG - Wow, Muhammed Ali. That would be nice to have. I may have to look him up. I'm sure my Vernon would enjoy some tutelage.
DeleteTheir facial expressions are certainly unique! Other than Shaq, I'm going to have to admit to not knowing who any of them are. I thought the Grant Hill was bald but seems like you are saying his hair line starts at the top of his head? Unless he's a Chinese monk, why would they do that?
ReplyDeleteThey're pretty cool. I used to have such a crush on Grant Hill. He was the ultimate "nice guy" in my opinion. I'm happy he married Tamia though, she seems sweet.
ReplyDeleteThese guys definitely have some domage, don't they, LOL. I didn't think there were dolls/figures out there to give Fashionistas competition in the big head department.
I do like Shaq and Grant and Juwan Howard's pretty nice looking too. Nice finds...
Tracy - I thought of your stories as I was doing this post. I remembered your sports theme of some of your earlier stories. Yes, their heads are a little big. I don't mind it for them. I will probably include my male Kenya doll in on that story. Oooh, Kenya's going to be dating one of these guys. She needs someone with a big head.
DeleteHello from Spain: great purchases. I like your new kids. I see that they are basketball players. I like their so real faces.! Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteMuff - Not surprising that you don't know the others. They are very popular, but aren't in the public eye like Shaq. Maybe they ran out of paint during their hair paint job. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteMarta - Thanks. They are very popular in the real world, so it will be nice to have them in Morristown.
ReplyDeleteWOW!! I really like them. I have Grant but would love the rest of them. I like that Shaq is smiling. He always seem pleasant.
ReplyDeleteVanessa You Have Scored. ( insert echo)
Ms. Leo - Okay, the echo had me laughing. They had been on my Amazon wishlist for about a year. Of course, I always forget about this list, but just happened to look at it and see they were cheaper than normal. Since I have free shipping with Prime, it really was a score.
DeleteOk, these guys have the best facial expressions!!
ReplyDeleteHeather - It's nice to have a couple of good smiling men.
DeleteGreat male sports stars. I bought them when they first came out and I wish they would make some more at 12" sport stars.
ReplyDeleteMale Doll World - I think the first place I found out about these dolls was on your site. I saw the Juwan Howard doll and went searching,. So thanks, again.
DeleteI really like Shaq. I didn't know there was a company that made dolls of sports stars. Hmm. I wonder if they do football stars. I'd love to have a Dan Marino or a Joe Montana doll. Looks like "Cindi" found your grocery store. She sure does get around! :-)
ReplyDeleteCindi - I didn't know about them until late last year. They have quite a few more. There's a chance I will add a few more later in the year. I haven't seen any football ones yet. I may have to look for some.
DeleteIverson looks short. I was going to ask if they were short. But you answered that question. LOL to Grants hairline.
ReplyDeleteKenya - I don't know what they were thinking about with that hairline. They made him look 60 yrs old.
DeleteI recognized Shaq from commercials and Iverson because he was with the 76s. And because Iverson got a lot of press while he was here so that even a non-sports fan like me recognized him from the news coverage.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your new guys! Yayyy! Always nice to find new playscale guys, especially on the tall end, lol, and ethnic males, too? Whoo hhoo.
In case I don't get another chance this end of the new year divide, wish you and yours a Happy New Year!
New blood muaahaha!
ReplyDeleteV. - The guys cringed at your comment. LOL. They don't have a clue about what's in store for them. I don't think they will be too disappointed.
DeleteHappy New Year, Vanessa!
ReplyDeleteGood purchases. I understand nothing in sports and don't know anything about these men in real life, but I saw them and some other dark-skinned guys as action figures on eBay. Maybe I'll buy some of them one day. My doll ladies also want to have husbands and fathers for their kids. lol. Really I have many doll families with teens, and Ken dolls are usually look too young to be their fathers (and they all have the same face - grrr), Gi Joes are too short and small-headed, and Power Team AA figures are hard to find, so I think these SL guys may be a good choice. It's bad, they are not fully articulated, but my Janay dolls and their teen sons and daughters, who need fathers, are also not. I'll be very glad to learn more about these guys, seeing them in your photo stories. Thanks for sharing.
Dukasha - Happy New Year! I agree some of the Mattel guys do not look old enough to be fathers. I can't believe how many men I added to the collection this year. Like would be wonderful if the GI Joe men were taller. They have some good looking GI Joe men.
DeleteYes, I'd like to have taller Gi Joes with bigger heads. Their heads are rather small, and it doesn't look good with normal Barbie or Janay heads. I have a Kid Kore doll, she is rather short and small-headed and looks good enough with Gi Joes. But she is not articulated, though I like her face.
DeleteYou know you can find your ladies so men!! I love them all. Please don't enable me!!
ReplyDeleteWhat very realistic faces, although I'll have to take your word for how good the likenesses are - I don't know any of these players (basketball isn't a huge sport in Australia). But good men (dolls) are hard to find and it's good that these are articulated to some degree.
ReplyDeleteCarrickters - Most of the sports figures from this line are spot on. These were from 1997 and 1998. I wish they were still making them.
DeleteD7ana - Yes, always nice to find more men, especially AA ones. The single ladies and some of the married ones, will be very happy. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteBrini - My ladies are like me. They like having plenty of choices. I don't want them thinking there is a scarcity of men around here.
ReplyDeleteHmmm....wondering if Muff's head shrinking technique would work on the starting line up and Kenya male dolls?
ReplyDeleteAG Lanc - I wouldn't mind trying it on the Kenya dolls. As for the bball players, I don't mind the big heads on them. Some of them have big heads in real life. It matches their big bodies.
DeleteMs.Vanessa love the new men dolls nice when you can find some aa male doll , where on earth did you fine them
ReplyDeleteVery nice big handsome men you have there. I love their height compared to the barbie dolls. Keep collecting!
ReplyDeleteEve - Yes, the bball players are a great addition. Lots of women have been smiling all around town.
DeleteI love yours new boys!! You always find fantastic things, congratulations!
ReplyDeleteLove Shaq...but that sexy Grant Hill thou! That's some serious eye candy right there! I'll take it over food any day. lol
ReplyDeleteSonya - I'm with you on the Grant Hill thing. Who needs food?
DeleteCournee - I bought the basketball figures from Amazon.
ReplyDeleteAna - Thanks. We are all happy they have arrived to town.
ReplyDeleteHi Vanessa, I'm a big fan of your blog. I also have some basketball figures, some by Starting Lineup, some by other brands. I'm curious to know if you have been able to find any clothes that can fit your figures. None of my Ken clothes or action figure clothes, particularly the pants are able to fit my figures. I'm at a loss, and I would like to be able to dress them in something other than a basketball uniform. Any information is appreciated. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeletethisisnova - I'm so happy to hear that you enjoy my blog. Thanks for your support. As for clothes, I lucked up at a local doll store and got a few clothes items that will fit the bball players. You can see them here http://vansdolltreasures.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-fashion-show-continues.html
DeleteI haven't really focused on their clothing yet, but I plan to find them something, or make them something. I will let you know if I find something.
