My Life is a Soap Opera

I figured I better check in and give you guys an update.  I wasn't going to mention any of this, but pretty soon you guys are going to start wondering where I am.

On March 16th, I was up, dressed and getting ready to go to chemo.  It was about 8am.  My bum leg was feeling better than it had in weeks.  I decided to fill up the dog bowl with more food since I was going to be gone all day long.  As I'm walking across my bedroom, with dog food bowl in hand, I slipped on something and went flying through the air.  I heard a snap in my bad leg, so as I hit the floor I just started screaming at the top of my lungs.  I was in a lot of pain.  My mom came running.  I had calmed down enough to see if I could move the leg.  I could, so I didn't feel like it was broken.  I decided to still go to chemo, but I was in so much pain I couldn't make it down the stairs.  I rescheduled my appointment for the following day.  I still couldn't get down the stairs and my doctor suggested I call emergency service and go get an x-ray.  I didn't want to spend my weekend in a hospital, so I told them I would just rest it and see how it was on Monday.  I reached out to my prayer warriors on my Dad's side of the family and told them to get to praying.  Monday came and even though I still couldn't walk very well, I decided to wait until Thursday (chemo day) to get the xray.  The following day, Tuesday, I went to bed around 6:30pm.  I hadn't been downstairs in 6 days, but I was exhausted from walking on the crutches and taking the pain meds.  I was awoken around 9pm to a loud noise.  I slowly got out of my bed and went to check to see if my mom was okay.  She was fine.  A tree had fallen in my backyard and with the flashlight, we could see that the tree was hugging the wall outside her bedroom.  Whew!  We dodged a bullet, or so I thought.  I decided to look in the bedroom next to hers and there was the tree.  It had come through the roof and ceiling.  I was dumbfounded.  I wasn't sure what to do or who to call.  I started with 911.  No one answered for over 40 mins.  I called a couple of my neighbors and they wanted to come rescue me and my mother.  I couldn't just leave my house with the huge hole and it still storming.  Finally, I got through to 911 and they sent out the firemen.  They partially tarped what they could on the roof and suggested we leave the house just in case the tree shifted and came further into the house.  Since I still couldn't walk down the stairs, I butt scooted out the house and one of my neighbors took me and my three dogs in.  Another neighbor took my mom in.  My neighbors were fabulous!

The two trees were removed the following day and my mom and I were back in the house around 6pm.  The following day I was able to get my x-rays and I'm happy to report there aren't any broken or fractured bones.  I'm still not walking very well.  I'm kind of scooting around with my crutches.  Hopefully, as I get more chemo in my body, the leg will start to heal.

DO ME A BIG FAVOR.  Please do not leave comments saying how sorry you are.  You wouldn't believe how many "I'm sorrys" I've gotten these past two weeks. I appreciate your sympathy in advance, but I didn't leave this post to get sympathy.  I'm leaving it to explain my absence, which may last much longer than I expect.  I do have my sewing machine right next to my bed, so I have been able to get orders completed and shipped.

P.S.  My new deck was not damaged at all. I still have to finish staining it. Secondly, the 1 ton tree that fell, wasn't even my tree.  It was my neighbors.  Sadly, I'm still responsible for getting my house fixed.  If anyone else experienced any crazy weather issues, I hope you and your families are all okay.

    1. RoxanneRoxanne - Me too! I was very concerned about broken bones because that would have meant another surgery. I gave that credit to God and my praying 1st cousins. They are truly gifted in that department.

  3. So glad that the tree did not land on you or your mom or furry babies! We're getting into the stormy season here, too, and usually see some tornado damage. Not fun to clean up!

PS I loooove the green safari Dasia jacket. I wish I had a Dasia to buy it for.

    1. Erin - It was so close to coming through my mother's bedroom. We were truly blessed. It could have been much worse.

So glad you like the jacket. If I can find some army green sweater like material, I would love to make her a zip up sweater.

Wouldn't it be your neighbor's responsibility since it was their tree? This happened to us a few years ago where we lost a 50+ year old tree during a storm. It fell partially on our roof and partially on the neighbor's roof and fence. Our homeowner's insurance paid for their damage as well as ours.

    1. DBG - Thanks. Me, too! Unfortunately here in GA the law says unless the neighbor was negligent, the home owner is responsible for their own damage. He and I both have State Farm. He had just gotten those trees checked out and they wasn't anything wrong with them. It was an act of mother nature. I will be asking a few more questions though, to make sure I'm getting everything that is entitled to me.

    2. Do ask more questions.

We had some horrible storms here this week and more to come. Thank God my area didn't get a drop of rain, wind, or hail that other areas experienced. Hoping and praying that we'll escape what they are forecasting for the rest of the week, too.

    3. DBG - Glad to hear you dodged the storm. I hope it passes right on by you this week, without any damage. I did ask more questions of a State Farm racquetball friend, and it falls completely on me because the tree was healthy and it was just an act of nature.

  9. Wow, Vanessa.....I was one of those who noticed and wondered that you hadn't posted in awhile. Where I am, we are truly blessed. We had a bad wind storm a couple weeks ago with gusts up to 68 miles per hour. About 3/4 million people in the state lost power...many for up to 8 days, this just as temperatures plummeted to single digits. Many trees came down on houses, some bringing down power lines. There was one sad story about a woman whose house caught on fire but the firemen were so busy, they couldn't help. So she watched her house burn down!
On the other hand, no one in our neighborhood had any power loss or tree damage. We were blessed. God is good. Happy to know you and your mom are okay.

    1. april_n_paris - That storm seemed to have come out of nowhere. We were blessed not to lose power, although friends of mine just a few miles away, did lose power. Losing power when it's cold outside is the worst. It happened to me years ago and I bought a kerosene heater after that. I can't imagine watching your house burn down to the ground. With all the trees that fell around GA, there was only one report of the tree killing one husband who didn't get out of bed in time. I do feel blessed. It could have been so much worse. Glad you guys are okay.

  10. Whoa! That's terrifying! I'm disappointed that your neighbor isn't helping with fixing your house after their tree fell on you, but the important thing is no one was hurt by it. Thank goodness you didn't hurt anything when you fell, too!

    1. Presto - My neighbor wanted to get his insurance company involved, which is the same company I use, but the insurance companies have to follow the law. My neighbor recently had a heart attack, their son is heading off to his first year of college, and the wife had to retire late last year. I'm sure they don't have any extra money laying around. They will be removing some other trees that are pretty suspect. That's good enough for me. I just have to worry about my deductible which is much higher than I remember. Lol. Isn't that always the case. We never suspect any thing is going to happen to our homes, so we choose slightly higher deductibles. Then when something does happen, we regret having the higher deductible. It will all work out in the end.

  15. Wow, Vanessa, when it rains, it pours (literally!), doesn't it? I am pretty sure that your homeowner's insurance covers that liability, not the neighbor's even though it was their tree.

I hope you will be up and about soon! I look forward to your stories and will be here ready to read them whenever you are up to posting them!

    Take care of yourself!

    1. Phyllis - Thanks. Yes, if that tree wasn't healthy or he and I had discussed it prior, he would have been responsible if not for the entire liability, at least for my deductible. He and I have had discussions about another tree in his yard, and his wife informed me they will be cutting it done as soon as they get another estimate. They are really nice people, so I'm not upset about the situation. I will just have to do a lot of sewing and a lot of tutoring to come up with the $2000.

    1. Muff - Isn't that the truth! Just when you think it can't get worse, it does. Tonight's tragedy in Atlanta is a bridge collapse on one of our major highways. Atlanta traffic can not handle a major highway closing in both directions for about a month. I'm just glad I don't have to be out there in the chaos.

  18. Well dang! It's always something, isn't it? I fully understand where you're coming from Vanessa. I'm not a fan of hearing the "I'm sorry" comments either. We're in a similar medical situation, and my health changes in a snap. I also live in tornado alley, so severe weather is to be expected. Keep your chin up, and I'm happy that you, your mother, and the doggies are ok. All else can be repaired or replaced.

    1. Lady Ed - I wish you the best possible outcome for your medical condition. If you ever need a friend to talk to, I'm here for you. Tornados are happening in some unexpected places. I'm not in a tornado area, and yet it's unexplainable hot the healthiest and largest tree in the back was uprooted so easily. My insurance company acted pretty quickly and repair should start next week.
