My Second Doll and Storage

I recently picked up the AA 2014 Holiday doll.  She was $9 at Walmart, and I couldn't pass that up.  She will remain in the box until I need her.  The dress is nice, so I can see one of my dolls wearing that for a function.  She is the first regular sized doll I've purchased this year.  I don't know if I will make my goal of only 10 dolls, but I'm doing pretty good so far.

Here is an update of my sketch I shared with you guys.  As of this morning, she now has hair.

I have a new way of storing my play dolls.  Walmart reduced the price of these storage carts to $9.  They are perfect for storing my dolls in the quantities I need.

I think I have now have six of these carts.  This will make it much easier to find the dolls I need for each story.

  1. She is very pretty -- she has the Goddess sculpt, correct? She reminds me of your Danielle. I admire you for your restraint in keeping to your purchase limit. Those storage units are great options for keeping your dolls handy! Most of my dolls are now on very crowded shelfs, so finding some containers or re-arranging the ones I now have sounds like a good idea. I am over crowded right now, so I am going to be selling some of my dolls soon.

    1. Phyllis - Yes, that's the Goddess sculpt. My boxed dolls are still on the shelves. My loose dolls were in various open boxes, but not all together. This way I can sort them better and keep up with them.

  2. Wow...$9??? Now, that's a steal! I love the idea you have for storing your dolls. I'm going to have to borrow that idea and also separate outfits per dolls. My guys will pretty much have to share but I'm trying to dress my (main) dolls according to their personality. :-). Nice idea, Vanessa.

    1. Tracy - Yes, $9! They had a ton and they were all the AA ones. The storage carts were $9, too. I said $10 in the blog. I tried separating the clothes by doll. Now I have big open bins for the doll clothes. I guess I should have showed that, too. I will soon.

  3. Got to love those bins! I have a few myself that I'm using to store clothing and accessories. Oh, and Dean says hello.

    1. adrian - Yes, I like the smaller ones for dolls because I can take out a bin with the dolls I need then put the dolls back right after I finish the story. I store clothes and accessories in open bins because I need to be able to quickly throw them back where they belong. Having to open a drawer keeps me from putting them back quickly, sometimes.

  4. Nice score! I got one on sale, too. Mine was 12 dollars, which is still a pretty good deal. I've already taken her out of the box, and she's ready for a re-root.

Also, I looove the hair in your drawing. So much depth and texture to it! It really looks three dimensional. Awesome work.

    1. Saturday Sequins - I had seen her for $15, but left her. Couldn't leave her for $9. Every doll, and there were over 30 boxes, had messed up hair. I can't for the life of me figure out why. Thanks. I hand was killing me after I finished working on her hair. I will probably do more to the hair later.

  5. One of my Walmarts had those dolls for $9 too but they did not have the AA version. I'll have to visit a few more to see if I can find her because I don't have that sculpt.

Those bins are a good price too!

    1. Muff - This Walmart only had the AA ones. They had a whole bunch of them. The bins are actually $9, not the $10 I quoted in my blog.

  6. What a very beautiful doll - and a beautiful price. Glad to hear you are still on track although I have read elsewhere that you have been tempted. Your drawing looks lovely, the hair really enhances her face.

    1. Carrickters - I'm not sure she will ever join the play dolls, but she will look nice on the shelf for now. I wasn't only tempted, I did buy a couple more dolls yesterday. They are small dolls, and I may count small dolls as 1/2 purchase. Or I may exclude kid dolls from the list of 10. I didn't really have them in mind when I said 10. Probably because I wasn't expecting to find more kid dolls to add. I was happy with how the hair turned out. Better yet, I was happy I didn't ruin the drawing.

  7. Great price on the holiday Barbie and on the bins. I have a couple of those that I use to file doll articles and other doll related papers. I don't store my dolls but the bins are an excellent way to store playscale dolls.

    1. DBG - I had the Girl Scout Barbie in my hands and ready to take her to the register, but then I saw this doll. I was very proud of myself for putting the Girl Scout Barbie back. Ordinarily, I would have bought them both. The bins were rolled back to $9, not $10. I've always wanted to store the play dolls more by communities. This makes that possible.

  8. Hi Vanessa, the Holiday Barbie is really pretty. I love how the drawing is coming, you did a great job drawing her hair!

    1. billa's dolls - Thanks. I was happy with the hair for a first time. Those 6 carts will store most of the play dolls, but not all of them. Now you see why I have limited myself to only 10 dolls this year? It's overwhelming to try to play with so many dolls.

  9. wow 6 storing carts! My problem is where would I put them? I already have four plastic bins of dolls, :( Iadmire your restraint so much. I like the bins with the drrawers as a better alternative. Do you store them with clothes on or off? I have clothing in dissarray. I have used these drawer bins for the stands, accessories and shoes right now. She is a great deal at that price. I have held off on these dolls since I have others that are coming in on preorder. sigh.

    1. Lisa - I had the dolls in larger boxes, but it takes too much time to find the dolls I need. This way I can sort them into smaller categories. For instance, one drawer is just for the college students,

  10. Vanessa, I was very tempted when I saw her for $9. I didn't get her since I'm focusing on male characters but I didn't think about using her as a wardrobe builder...good idea. I,'ve noticed that the Walmarts in the predominantly black neighborhoods are selling her for $15…smh. I've observed that kind of thing before. I didn't really think about kid dolls either when planning for the year. I bought an AA Kelly from another collector yesterday.

    1. Jewell - I bought her because I frequently see restyled older dolls on flickr and I always end up kicking myself for not getting them, once I see them restyled. Can't go wrong for $9. Walmart is a business. It makes business sense to sell them for the $15 in an area where they are likely to sell. They were $15 at this store, too, but since they still had a ton of them left, they moved to the $9.

    1. Cindi - I hate that this Barbie took up one of my doll spaces for the year, but I couldn't leave her there for that price. I know I would have regretted it.

Thanks for sharing the tip about that storage unit. I'll consider it for a place to store my loose dolls.

  14. I just bought this same doll, at Walmart, for $15. Now I'm not happy. That is $6 I could have spent on another doll item. Darn, darn, darn!

Anyway, I had no intentions of buying her, but she called me. Yes, she said, "Hey, don't you see me over here. See my face? It's lovely, isn't it? You need me. I can tell."

I tried to leave her, but she simply insisted I not leave without her. Now she's telling me to hurry up and get her into a body where she can relax and chill with the other ladies, so she can get out of that box and into more comfortable clothes. She's a little bossy already.

I am also tempted to go to Walmart and get some of those carts. I can use them for clothes and materials storage. You got some great deals!

    1. Janainah - Lol! She's still a great buy at $15. That's more than 50% off the retail. And by the way it sounds, there was no way you were leaving without her. I have a cheerleader doll that looks kind of similar. I may be able to use her as Lisa's mom. Hmmm? I kind of wish she looked a little older. Typically the Holiday Barbies do look older.
