Project Runway Returns!

One of my favorite shows, Project Runway (PR) returned last week.  Imagine my excitement when I looked at my DVR and there were two episodes taped.  There was also an episode of America's Next Top Model taped.  Felt like I had won the lottery.  Okay, maybe not the lottery.  More like a $25 scratch off.  On PR they have a young, plus-sized designer.  Her story touched me because she had been bullied in school, for her weight.  She was also dyslexic, and her self esteem was a bit shaky.  Fashion designing really helped her find herself.  Well she ended up winning the first challenge.  Of course she cried.

As you know, my Dasia doll is an older woman, so the fashions I make for her are age appropriate for someone in her 50s+.  About a week ago, I got a request for an outfit that would be appropriate for a young Dena doll.  I was sent a picture, and I said I would do a sample outfit first, just to make sure the person would like it,

Here is the sample outfit in some scrap fabric I had.  I like how it turned out.  The customer's outfit will be done in a black.  Creating this outfit did a couple things.  I am now intrigued about making outfits for the younger BBW dolls.  It has also gotten me excited about starting a fall wardrobe for Dasia.  Turtlenecks are one of my favorite things to wear in the colder months.  You can dress them up and dress them down.

  1. It's cute! I hope she likes it. I think I know whom you speak of. She creates really exotic hairstyles for her dolls. I cannot wait to see her finished project sporting your design!

  2. I love this outfit! It is very fitting for the younger divas. I absolutely love colors, but I can imagine that the black will look even better especially accessorized. Beautiful job Vanessa!

    1. Muff - Thanks. I wish I had another doll that I could strictly style as a younger version. A different hair style would help with the vibe.

    1. jSarie - Thanks! I think Dasia is hoping for a black one, too. Not going to happen, if I can help it.

  7. I loved the girl's story on Project Runway. My only issue with the show is...why could she not have had a plus sized model. It didn't fly right with me. I am happy that she won though. She deserved it...

    1. Tracy - I was thinking the same thing about the plus sized model, but it might be to her disadvantage to use a plus sized model. Money wise, she would be spending more money on fabric and notions than the other designers because she would need more fabric. Is this the first time they've had a plus sized designer? If so, maybe they will figure out something different the next time.

    2. Very true...never thought about that. Well, let's just get her to win the show. :-)

  9. Vanessa, I really like this on Dasia! And, as a 50+ "model" myself, I say she can pull this off. If she feels self conscious about it, you could always put a camisole under it to give it a layered look. As far as plus sized models on PR, I saw an episode a few years back where they brought in plus sized ladies for all of the designers to have them make outfits for them. The plus size models had input to the design of the clothing. I think in a competition, it would be difficult to compare clothing for a plus size person with clothing for a skinny person, not because of needing more fabric, but because the clothing styles would be quite different. I do think, that they could do an episode where all of the designers got plus sized models though.

    1. Phyllis - Dasia doesn't feel self conscious at all! I did see the episode where the brought in larger models. At the very least, they could give the plus sized model what the fashion industry considers plus sized which is a size 10 and above. I think it's our stereotypes that would make it "hard" to compare the size 10 model to the size 2 model. That's what I love about America's Next Top Model. Tyra tries to help redefine what is the "typical" model. She has had several plus sized models win it all. And they competed against the skinny models. Not all the designers are plus sized designers. She is. So I think they should take that into consideration.

  10. Dasia looks fabulous. The sample (with scrap material?) turned out great!

I like turtlenecks too for the same reasons you cited.

  11. I saw this dress and I loved it. I haven't watched project runway in a long time, so havent' seen the episode. I think the color makes her look really sexy, like she's going out on the town. Great job!

    1. Lisa - Thanks! That color works really good on her. I think sometimes larger women stick to the darker colors, but sometimes those bright colors work well.
