The Burkes Get Project #4 Too (Photostory)

If you are just tuning in, I am in the process of making six wooden projects that need to be completed by the first week of May. Wow, where has the year gone?  I decided to construct them first, then go back and apply finishes.  The Burkes got the first project, a baby cradle.  The second project was just a wall hanging dedicated to the troops.  You will get a glimpse of the third project at the end of this post.  The fourth project is also going to the Burkes.  It's just a simple wooden bed.  I have a four poster bed on my to-do list, but didn't feel like doing that today.  I will more than likely add some decorative touches to this bed, before I add the finish, and some really nice bedding, after I add the finish. Both the nightstands need to be finished, too.

Kendra's sitting on the edge of her bed.  She's not feeling the greatest today.  She is so ready for this pregnancy to be over.

She stares at the unfinished nursery.  Her husband has been so busy at the hospital, he hasn't had time to finish painting the room.  If he doesn't hurry, the baby will be here before it gets done.

"Honey?"  (Nathanial just arriving home)
"In the bedroom."  (Kendra)

"Hi, sweetheart.  How are you feeling?"  (Nathaniel)

"Like the Goodyear blimp."  (Kendra)
"I really wish you wouldn't say things like that."  (Nathaniel)
Nathaniel makes his way to the bed to sit next to Kendra.

"You are still my very gorgeous wife."  (Nathaniel)
"I just can't wait to see my feet again.  What do they look like?  I swear I don't remember."  (Kendra)
Nathaniel ignores her.
"Aren't you going to ask me about the cradle?"  (Nathaniel)

"That's right.  I almost forgot.  That's another thing.  I can't wait to get my memory back, either.  I seem to be forgetting everything lately."  (Kendra)
Nathaniel can tell his wife just needs a hug.

He slides a little closer and puts his arms around her.
"Honey, hang in there, this will all be over very soon."  (Nathaniel)
"I know.  I know.  Nine months just seems like an eternity."  (Kendra)

"Now tell me about the cradle."  (Kendra)

Project three will probably be my favorite out of the bunch.  It is going to be an upright piano.  I've been wanting a doll sized one for awhile.  There's the Gloria grand piano that is sold on ebay.  I've almost bought it a million times.  It's very well done, but I really wanted an upright.  I learned to play the piano on an upright and somehow my mom got her hands on a used one, so I could have one at home.  My mom was, and still is, really good at tracking down the bargains.

I am dedicating this piece to my piano teacher, Mrs. Edwards.  May she rest in peace.  She was an incredible classical pianist, and a pretty strict piano teacher.  She was an African American woman probably in her late sixties, early seventies.  "Do it again."  Those three words are etched into my brain.  That was her favorite phrase.

Lots more to do to this piece, but I wanted to share my progress.

Last, but not least, Bruce and I made homemade doggy biscuits, so he could share some with the neighborhood dogs.  Lolly, the dog next door, was thrilled.  Bruce knows how to make friends.

These are made with peanut butter, whole wheat flour, and oatmeal.  It anyone is interested in the recipe, let me know.  I was tempted to taste one, but without any sugar, I knew it was not going to taste so great.  Hey, I heard that.  Who said, "She needs to get a life."?

  3. Oh, poor Kendra. As I've heard, pregnancy is a blissful yet accursed time LOL. Love the piano! I can't wait to see it's finished result. I'm currently learning the piano myself after hanging up the violen.

  5. Kudos on the piano! I have been frustrated for years that the only pianos available in 1:6 scale seem to be grand pianos. Once you work out the pattern, you should put the uprights in your Etsy store.

    1. limbe dolls - Thanks. I've experienced that same frustration. An upright takes up a lot less space, too. I started making patterns already with the intent of making more.

    1. Marta - Thanks. Yes, Kendra is very pregnant. LOL. I guess if she and her husband had time, they would also finish the bed, but it looks like they are leaving that to me.

  9. Love the piano (so far). My strict piano teacher didn't leave a good impression on me. I had crocodile tears through every lesson. And she had the nerve to ask my grandmother if I could be the flower girl in her wedding. I was in the first grade. If I dared to talk back to my grandmother when she told me that I would have said, "Oh no she didn't."

So what do you use to make the dolls have a pregnant belly?

    1. Kenya - Awww, that's terrible what your piano teacher did. "Oh no she didn't!" LOL! Her poor husband. I used clay to make give my dolls a pregnant belly. Mattel did several pregnant dolls years ago. I have one of those bellys, but it's in one of my doll dressers that is missing since the move. Mattel used magnets to hold the belly on.

    1. Brini - Thanks. I had to come to grips that the pieces won't be just like I want them to be starting out. But with practice they will get a lot better.

  11. Poor Kendra, maybe she should lay back with with her feet up and try getting some rest. I love their bedroom by the way. I hope Nathaniel gets to the nursery before the bundle of joy arrives.

The piano is awesome! It reminds me of the old time Saloon type of pianos. Danielle's mom looks great modeling it. :)

    Nice work!

    1. Tracy - If I had given the poor child some pillows, she would have been resting peacefully. She will get over it. LOL. They may have to hire someone to come finish that nursery. Dr. Nathaniel is not the handiest man around. Have you been watching some old westerns? Or have you been hanging out in some California saloons? LOL.

  12. Love the piano! Can't wait to see it when it's done. I've been working on furniture for Casey's place so I'm always hunting around for ideas. I'm curious to see how you do the piano keys. :-)

    1. Cindi - Thanks. I have a couple ideas for the keys. I have to see which one works best. I'm sure Casey's place is going to be wonderful.

  13. Poor Kendra, the last few weeks are the toughest. Nathaniel better get that nursery finished or Kendra will get that final burst of energy and go into labour while painting or something. It's nice the Burke's get the bed but who gets the piano?

    1. Carrickters - If Kendra was relegated to bed rest with her difficult pregnancy, she would have had that nursery finished by now. The piano will go to the piano teacher. Not sure who that will be. The Taylors are planning to send Nikaya and Zahara for piano lessons.

  17. You're making lots of progress with your wooden projects. Love Kendra 's bedspread. I wanted to see underneath... the unmade bed.

The piano is coming along nicely.

For a second I thought the doggie biscuits were carved too. Silly me. Since I do not eat much sugar, they probably would taste good to me.

  18. The bed looks very realistic by now, so I guess when it's finished it will be perfect. Poor Kendra, I haven't been pregnant myself but I guess it must be too much at the ende... The piano is just awesome, I love the design and I'm willing to see it with the black and white keys, it must be amazing! As for the biscuits, I'm sure they taste ok, though maybe you could try to sparkle some sugar and cinnamon on them before!

    1. Georgia Girl - Thanks. I really need to get on that baby shower. I will try to focus on that next. It's so hard when I'm trying to get the town put back together. It's still a little disorganized, which makes the diorama making process a little more time consuming.
