PLL and Their Dolls

PLL stands for Pretty Little Liars, which is a primetime show here in the States.  It is based on a series of books by Sara Shepard.  There are 4 - 5 main female characters, who are being blackmailed and sometimes tortured by an anonymous person named A, who can somehow see everything that is going on with the girls.  Turns out A is not just one person, but a team of people who tend to change over time.  They are just wrapping up their 5th season, but I just started watching about a month ago on Netflix.  I am currently on season 4.  From the very beginning dolls were a central theme throughout.  The LIV dolls were the first dolls shown that A uses to represent the 4 -5 girls he/she is torturing.  So far I have seen antique dolls, bobble heads, and 18 inch fashion dolls I don't recognize.  Normally I don't watch shows where dolls are used in a creepy manner, but surprisingly I love this show.  It is well written and keeps you guessing.  Are there any fans out there?

LIV dolls

A doll hospital

Bobble heads.

18 in dolls to represent each girl.  Anyone know which dolls these are?

Tons of antique dolls used throughout.

Doll in a casket.

No Barbie dolls have shown up, yet.  It will be interesting to see if they ever do.

  1. I've never heard of the show. I don't normally watch creepy anything but might have made an exception for this show because of the dolls had I known about it.

I cannot see the faces of the 18-inch dolls well enough to determine who they are, but I am sure someone can ID them.

Thanks for the information about the show. If I ever get bored, and after I watch the multiple things I have recorded to watch in my free time that I have not yet gotten around to watching, I might check this out on Netflix.

    1. DBG - I first heard of the show when one of the characters danced on Dancing with the Stars. Once I saw the first show I got sucked into finding out who A was. The dolls were a definite added plus.

    1. car,em - Tengo muñecas LIV también. Si tuviera el espacio y el tiempo, me gustaría hacer algo con ellos. Sus cabezas son grandes, pero me hacen como ellos en una especie de extraña manera.

  5. I've seen stills for this show, but I haven't followed it. I thought it was about teenaged werewolves ;-P

    The doll angle is interesting.

    1. D7ana - No teenage werewolves. Just a lot of drama and constant suspense

    2. Heh, I'd assumed it was a high school supernatural-type show as well! Too funny.

  6. I watched the first season and part of the second. I'm glad you said that A was multiple people because I got super tired of never knowing who A was and just gave up on it.

    1. Muff - I almost gave up but season 3 was awesome. Once you get to season 3, everything opens up and you get some answers. You won't believe who the first A was. Totally threw me. And the 2nd A was the biggest surprise, yet. Have I enticed you to look again? LOL.

  7. I've watched a couple seasons. The show was starting to stress me out, though, so I stopped watching. I guess teenage girls are just too scary for me!

I do like the use of the dolls, though. It's a nice, creepy touch.

    1. Sarah - It can be a little stressful. Up until I got to season 3, I couldn't watch more than a few shows back to back. A few days ago, when I was working in my studio, I watched from 9am until about 1am the following morning. That was season 3 and I couldn't stop watching.

  8. I have heard of Pretty Little Liars but didn't know about the doll connection. We do not have Direct Tv or cable as it is an added expense and I would rather spend the money on dolls. lol. But your 18 inch dolls look like a variety of different dolls- like the generic dolls that used to be sold in the department stores like Target or Toyrs rus- those really thin ones, I forget their name, they were out for a year or two and had really cute outfits that could fit the Tonners . One looks like a journey girl, I could be wrong. They could even be Madame alexanders fashion dolls. the one on the end that is ablonde- she looks vintage because of the face, maybe an effanbee or a ginny. I can't blow up the pic so it's hard to tell. what channel does it come on? I might go to youtube and see if I can find it, you have me curious now.

    1. Lisa - I watch PLL on Netflix. I have cable now, but I went without it for over 10 yrs. If you have a small antenna box for your tv, you can still get the regular primetime stations. Remember when they switched from analog to digital tv and everyone was able to get a free digital box? Well that box allowed me to get about 11 channels free of charge. On hulu.com, you can see the last 5 episodes of most tv shows. To see full seasons and prior seasons would require huluplus.com, which is $8 per month. Much cheaper than cable. Netfilx is also $8 per month and you get a lot of tv shows and movies. Thanks for the doll info. They probably did use various dolls to get them to look more like the characters.

  9. The name of the show does sound familiar somehow, though I've never watched it. I rarely find dolls creepy, but I still kind of like how they used them here, particularly the 18'' dolls (which to me seems like a size that wouldn't be very well-known among non-collectors).

    1. Anderson's AP - I have never watched any of the Chucky movies because I am famous for having nightmares. I'm liable to get up and throw all my dolls out if I start dreaming about them. lol. Did you mean to say the 18" WOULD be well-known among non-collectors? I think that size and Barbie size are the most popular.

  10. I was into watching Twisted but then the writers messed up the show so bad, there was a movement to cancel it. I just couldn't get into PLL. I'm a Scandal head and I'm getting into The Slap and American Crime...good shows so far.

I have a feeling if Mattel makes PLL Barbies, they'll end up looking just like the Fifth Element dolls. I feel like they'll be lazy about it. It'd be pretty cool though. :-)

    1. Tracy - I never heard of Twisted. I'm surprised I'm so into PLL, but I am. I can watch it for hours on in. I'm watching now and A just delivered an 18 in doll in the most beautiful white doll sized casket. I know. A little creepy, but that casket was a work of art. Their seasons are really long. I'm a Scandal and Empire head right now, too.

  11. It's king of hard to see in the picture, but the middle "18" doll" almost looks like Maru from the Maru and Friends line. They're actually 20" I think, but that's close!

    1. Tam - I didn't know anything about the Maru and friends dolls. Those are really nice. Too rich for my pocket, but to be expected for Dianna Effner dolls. Thanks for the info. Looking closer at the dolls, I can see that they are all probably from different lines. When I saw the episode, they all looked very similar, but not the case.

  14. NOTE TO ALL - I just added a new picture of a doll in a casket. It was from an episode I watched yesterday. When watching the show, the casket looked pretty extravagant. When looking at it up close, it looks like they used a styrofoam container and dressed it up. Pretty clever.

  15. Thanks. I heard of the show but did not know they used dolls in the show. I probably would have watched the first season just for the dolls.

    1. Male Doll World - Just watching the first season would have been frustrating. You would have to make it to season 3 before you could feel like you hadn't wasted time watching the first 2 seasons. lol. I just finished season 4 and the dolls are still there but not as prevalent as seasons 1 and 2.

  16. I never watched the show, it's kinda nice to know of all the dolls they utilize. That means there are true doll lovers who worked on that show.
