Dual Duty Thrift Store Find

I found this thrift store goodie, myself.  No help from mom this time.  I almost left it in the store because the inside is not in great shape.  But the outside will come in handy.

I've never seen it before.  It's marked Mattel 1984.  Any help with identification would be greatly appreciated.

This is the inside.  I think there was a fold up bed on the left side.  There are stickers of a headboard, a stereo, and odds and ends on the shelf.

On the right is the closet.

This is the back side, which is an office area.  This is the side that convinced me to buy it for $3.53.

This is the supply cabinet.

I've been planning to setup an office area using the desk I bought from ebay last year.  Yes, the desk will be painted.  This new piece will come in handy.

The back side can be an office bathroom.  This side will more than likely be painted.  I haven't seen too many pink office bathrooms.

  1. Wow! Great find! I have never seen it before either. I agree it can be used many ways. I knew a woman who had this studio/loft apart/office. She had her office in the front and a curtain that separted it from the
bedroom/kitchen where she lived. She always said that she didn't live there but spent the night if work got kinda busy but I think we all new she lived there. I guess it helped her save money. Maybe that a story for you!;)

Anyway, I am sure you will do something fab with it. You already have!

    1. Ms. Leo - JustJay found out it is called Barbie Home and Office. Pretty cool. That would make for an interesting story, but my initial office plans will include a couple of cubicle type desks.

  2. Cool find, Vanessa! I don't recognize the scenesetter, but I recognize the pink desk as being a Gloria office.

Looking forward to seeing the results of your makeover ;-)

    1. D7ana - Thanks. Do you know which Gloria desk? I've seen the two Gloria desks that are still available, and this isn't either one of those. I have one of the Gloria desks on order as we speak. Ordered it before I bought this piece. Seems like perfect timing.

    1. Verona - I have a few thoughts in mind. I've always thought of Leslie as working in an office. Secondly, Vanessa and the other interior designer have started working together. Then of course there is Sunni, our realtor, who recently lost her office space in the Aframe house to Shantavia.

  5. With your artistic talent, you will probably make this set look awsome as usual! :) I love the desk you got on ebay. I also paint alot of my pieces to look more natural to!

    1. william - I like the stickers on the office side , so I may leave that alone at first, and paint that side a little later. That pink desk will be getting a paint job real soon.

  7. Hello from Spain: I saw a picture of this set. This furniture is her office. I think it's the year 1980. On the one hand is the office and the other is the Barbie room with dressing. I did not and neither I have sold in the stores in my city. Keep in touch

    1. Marta - It's a pretty nice set. The year is 1984 on the piece. The video of it shows the missing pieces. This gives me even more ideas.

  8. Great bargain on an office set! I had seen this one on eBay but the pink always put me off. I've only recently learned how to paint things. I'm sure you will make it look fabulous!

  9. Ohhh!!! I wanted this when I was a child!! It was in the Day to Night line, and I wanted one for my Day to Night Barbie. Lucky you, it's impossible to find something like that around here! I'm sure you will turn it into a perfect office.

    1. Rossetti - I didn't even know there was a Day to Night line. I will have to look that up. I'm sure they have some other great pieces. Thanks for the info.

  10. I love how the collapsible Barbie set folds, not into a cube, but rather some sort of gem shape. Makes me think of some fairytale castle set rather than modern compact living. I've been eyeing the Gloria office sets on ebay myself.

    1. Anderson - I, too, love that they make it a different shape. I finally have an office set coming. I really only wanted the copy machine and the chair, but I will put the desk to good use.

  13. I vaguely remember seeing this set many years ago and thinking it was really cool. I like your idea of making it an office setup with a couple of cubicles. And, no, I've never seen a pink office bathroom! LOL Did this have a kitchen part? If it does, maybe you could make it into a break room for the employees. :-)

    1. Cindi - I have to research this Day to Night playline. There probably was a kitchen. Not that I am going to be buying it. Stop trying to get me to spend more money. LOL!

    1. DBG - I'm glad I didn't leave it. I would have been kicking myself. I have you to thank for me getting it. This Goodwill is right next door to the woodshop where I buy the pen cases. It's a bit of a drive, so I would never have seen this otherwise.

    1. Connor - I hope to get this done within the next couple of months. This office will be for a couple of different residents. As a single office, I'm thinking Leslie. As a dual office, when my new desk arrives, I'm thinking Vanessa and Lydia, the interior designers.

  17. Maybe whoever worked there was a Mary Kay lady, thus the pink. Very cool deal.

    1. Muff - Funny you should mention Mary Kay. There was a Mary Kay rep on tv today that had earned 11 cars in her 20 yrs as a Mary Kay rep. I may have to steal your Mary Kay lady idea. Not for this office, but to have around town. Would be nice for all this pink to make sense somewhere.

  18. Great find and all on your own too. This will certainly feature in many stories although I like the idea of it being both a home and an office. A lot of people in my area work from home running all sorts of businesses (in fact, they outnumber the business premises quite significantly).

    1. Carrickters - I may get a chance to use it as a home/office before I put it in an office setting. I have a few new dolls here, I just have to pick one for the role. I want to add a British born lady. This may be the best time to use this piece.
