Grandma Awaits Their Arrival (Photostory)

Danielle's mom, Roberta is enjoying a cup of coffee with her neighbor, Tanya.  Tanya stops by a couple times a week to check on her.
"That was my daughter on the phone.  They should be here in a few hours."  (Roberta)
"How exciting.  I can't wait to meet her.  I feel like I know her and the boys already."  (Tanya)

"My grandsons are going to steal your heart.  Especially the oldest  boy, Julian.  He's a little charmer."  (Roberta)

Roberta lives in a small Queen Anne style home in the Lake Cherokee Historical district of downtown Orlando.
This is a glimpse into her living room.  She says please forgive her pink walls.  She hasn't had time to get them painted.

Meanwhile, back on the plane, the stewardess has just served lunch.
"Can I get you guys anything else?"  (Stewardess)
"No.  We're good." (Rod)

"Mom, do I have to eat the salad?"  (Julian)

"At least try it.  Then if you don't like it, you don't have to eat it."  (Danielle)

"Your chicken looks good, Nicole."  (Danielle)

"Hey, you got salad, too."  (Julian)
"Dad, they forgot my drink." (Nicole)
"No they didn't.  You are going to split a drink with Julian."  (Rod)

"Wait a minute, Jacob.  I'm going to give you some."  (Danielle)

"Honey, did you want to try some of mine?"  (Rod)
"It looks good, but I'm going to pass."  (Danielle)

An hour has passed.  The stewardess has retrieved the trays and they are approaching the Orlando airport.  Julian and Jacob have both fallen asleep.
"Ooh Daddy, look!"  (Nicole)
"I see."  (Rod)

Pretty soon they will be seeing grandma Roberta!

  1. Grandma looks like she has a lovely house (even with the pink walls). Has she got enough room for them all or are they staying at a hotel? Oh and Happy New Year, Vanessa.

    1. Carrickters - Grandma is happy with her cozy home. It's her style and close to downtown, so she can get her walking in. It's close to the park and she is able to ride her bike. Yes, she has a bike.

  2. Hello from Spain: I really like Roberta. I have not in my collection Barbie's mother. I envy you! I really like the room. I have that same Victorian house Mattel. I do not dare to paint it but I would like real walls, not pink. I am excited to see the change that you make. I like food trays air travel. You have plenty of food. Happy Year! We keep in touch in 2013.

    1. Marta - I'm very happy she was gifted to my collection this year. She's been very busy since her arrival. This house has been sitting in my basement for over 3 years and this is the first time it will get any use. Happy New Year!

  3. Awwww. I had tried to comment previously. The traveling posts make me tired. I flew a few times with Christopher at Jacob's age and it was exhausting. Nows she's got to hold up his heavy head while he's knocked out. LOL! She's going to need a nap. I can see where Grandma's living room came from. It looks great. I hope she'll have a job for Rod to help paint or put some wallpaper over the pink.

    1. Kenya - Welcome back! Julian does have a big head. LOL! She will get some rest when she gets to FL. Grandmas will happily keep the kids occupied. She is still on the fence as to whether to really paint it or not. The value of the house is so much higher when left in it's original condition. So we will see. (I may put up some easily removable contact paper to preserve the integrity of this house.)

  4. I always love seeing what you put on Roberta to get some ideas for Camille. I see Roberta and Danielle have a pension for green! Like mother like daughter! It is good for Roberta to have someone where she lives to look in on her! It may be good for Danielle and Tanya to exchange numbers just in case. Congrats on the use of another house and a cute story!

    1. Ms. Leo - I lucked up at the last doll show. I was able to find Roberta a few outfits with a great fit, and nice style for an older lady. Great idea for Tanya and Danielle to exchange numbers. Initially I thought Roberta would live in the Smarthouse, but then I saw someone show the Victorian house on Flickr and felt that would be a better fit for her.

    2. So who gets the Smart House? MMM!

    3. Ms. Leo - It took about 4 yrs for me to use this house. I won't wait that long to use the smarthouse. As of today, I have yet to open the box. Probably won't until after Disney.

  5. I guess Robertas okay with the serenity of her home ruined by the sound of excited children LOL. I'm sure she's very happy for them to come visit her. I wish Ian was in to join the fun though.

    1. Verona - Roberta will welcome the hustle and bustle of the family. I'm sure she will be happy to have her serenity back in a week. Sorry Ian couldn't make the trip. It's a busy time at his job, and he got stuck working for the holidays.

    1. Muff - LOL! And here I was thinking the Morristown kids would never grow up.

  11. My goodness Vanessa, you are a true collector! You're folks in Morristown are super lucky. Love Roberta's home. I hope I to luck out and find that house one day for a good deal. I see them on Craigslist but folks are crazy, so I don't usually purchase off Craigslist unless I can have someone ride with me.

I'm so excited for Danielle and her family, they're going to have a blast. :))

    1. Tracy - I've just been in the right place at the right time. It's so hard to leave these houses in the thrift stores when you see them. I also got the train, the cruise ship, a townhouse and the beach house from the thrift store. Maybe they will all make an appearance in 2013.

I just recently bought a second sewing machine from someone on Craigslist. I, too, had been leery, and hadn't done deals on Craigslist in many, many years. But turns out this woman was a godsend. She's an alternative medicine doctor, with a wealth of information, and a lot of connections to people like Magic Johnson, that could help with my future business endeavors. When I left there, I realized our meeting was less about the sewing machine and more about getting us together. Be cautious, but never fearful.

    2. Wow, that gives me chills. You know God's hand was in that meeting...alternative medicine? That's so awesome!

One of the things I keep saying I'm going to do but haven't is venture out to other thrift stores away from where I live. I'm sure there are some really awesome toy finds just waiting for me, I just have to remember in time enough to make store hours. :)

  12. I am glad the family had a pleasant flight. I enjoyed their interactions and conversations regarding the flight food. Julian is too cute and always the starring attraction.

It's nice of Tanya to check in on Grandma and provide her with company from time to time.

    1. DBG - If Grandma had her wish, it would be a nice gentleman stopping by to check on her, but for now Tanya will have to do.

  13. Wow Vanessa!! The food looks amazing..I just got off a 18 hr plane ride from Dubai and the food was HORRIBLE. Did you make the food or did it come with the plane?

    1. Priya - Congrats on your Dubai trip. The 18 hrs sound awful. They really should have had good food to compensate for the long trip. The airplane food is from Rement. They had a whole series of airline food a number of years ago. It's hard to come by the complete set, but there are still individual sets available sometimes.
