What Happened to the MyScene Crew?

The other day I was undressing my Top Model Nikki doll.  She was wearing a beautiful light blue dress with a ruffle down the middle.  For a split second I was thinking it was a dress from one of Mattel's exclusive lines from many years ago.  Then I remembered it was a MyScene dress from a Madison doll I deboxed not too long ago.  Which got me to thinking.  Where the heck is the team that made the MyScene clothes and playsets?  Did Mattel fire this crew?  The clothes were stylish and well made.  The playsets were much sturdier and nicer looking than the Barbie playsets.  Just because the MyScene dolls are no longer, doesn't mean the clothes and the playsets have to disappear, does it?  Below are a few pictures of MyScene dolls, all currently available on ebay for sale.  None of them are my listings, or my images, but I just wanted to point out the clothing and a couple of playsets.  There are many more examples.

Nikki wearing a MyScene dress.

They made the cutest little coats and jackets!

The men were very stylish.

Just an example of the quality of their playsets.

Hey Mattel, can we get clothes and playsets like you used to make for MyScene dolls?  Inquiring minds want to know.

  2. I knew that when sales of My Scene dolls began to slip in the US, Mattel phased them out in favor of the Fashion Fever dolls

    1. Sergio - I think the MyScene dolls got caught up in the Bratz lawsuit. Would be nice to see the quality and stylishness of the MyScene clothes and playsets in what is being produced today for Barbie.

    1. Georgia Girl - I've only recently got a couple of the playsets. When they were first out, I don't think I was doing much with dolls.

  7. Love, love the two playsets. I aslo have a lot of MyScene clothes and they look amazing. You can still find a few MyScene dolls in the Romanian shops but they are mostly glittery so I'm not very interested in them.

  8. I HATED the My Scene dolls because of their over-sized heads. I LOVED the play sets. I acquired a few of the dolls because they came with play sets but I got rid of them as quickly as possible. I lucked out at the end of the My Scene series when Toys R Us was going bankrupt and I got a ton of the play sets at great prices. I have the hair salon you display above and three of the coffee shop play sets (got them for $5 each).

I wish Mattel would return to this level of design. One reason I like the Monster High line is I think this is where the My Scene designers went. The Monster High clothes and play sets are about the only interesting designs on the play scale market these days.

I think this was a case where healthy competition in the market place generated better quality and value for consumers. It is a shame that Mattel decided to use lawsuits to get rid of their competitors (the Bratz line) instead of relying on strong design. Now that they have no major competitors, they are satisfied with churning out schlock.

    1. limbe dolls - You may be right! They may be making MH stuff now. I never played with my MyScene dolls, but after deboxing them, I really like them. But their big heads means they are currently on the sale block. Having competitors is always great for the consumers and the companies. It pushes them to perform to higher standards.

  9. I agree - love the MS playsets. Like Limbe Dolls, I disliked the larger heads, but in my case, I used the MS bodies for other dolls ;-D

    Take that Mattel - ;-D

    1. Roville - I've been giving Mattel a pass lately, but every time I see a Fashion Ave, A BMR, and now a MyScene outfit, I think of revoking that pass. And let's not talk about the playsets. How are you able to produce now highly sought after MyScene playsets and poorly crafted Barbie playsets at the same company? Hmmmm.

  11. I'm sorry I missed out on those playsets myself, but I'd be willing to carry a protest sign in front of Mattel's hq in El Segundo! LOL

The Quality MY SCENE Is Higher!
Mattel is having great trouble in therms of the problems the dolls made in Indonésia are bringing to collectors...
It doesn't had to be this way!!

    1. Jorge - It's so strange to me that the quality is so different with some of Mattel's lines. It's almost like they don't come from the same company. I do realize that at big companies different departments don't talk to each other sometimes, but you would think the CEO would want the quality of all the products to be high.

  13. I had one of the my scene dolls and it was so cool. About a week later they weren't in stores anymore :( They should really bring it back! Maybe we can somehow persuade them to...

    1. sisilovessinging - To be honest, I'm not really looking for the dolls to return. I just want Mattel to produce the quality of clothes and playsets for Barbie that they did for the MyScene dolls. I think, but don't quote me, that the MyScene dolls got caught up in the Bratz lawsuit. There were some issues regarding this line.

  17. OMG, you're too right. The My scene playsets were awesome. I wish my collecting would have started around the time they were reasonably priced and not hard to find. I love the clothing too...don't know what Mattel's problem is.

    1. Tracy - I've gotten a couple of the MyScene sets lately and I've been very happy with them. That is one of the "If I knew then, what I know now" issues. I would have bought every one of them that came out. I still have one to debox in the basement to steal her outfit.
