Kia and My Old Convention Dolls

I am not supposed to be posting right now.  I'm supposed to be in my car, but a quick trip to the basement and this post was born.  I noticed Kia, one of the many porcelain dolls I made about 7 years ago.  I sort of reminisced about those times.   I remembered making her wig, her jewelry and her outfit.  Those were good times.

I used regular braided hair pieces from the beauty shop to create her wig.

As you can see, Kia is a big doll.  Here she is shown with Pastor Camille.

While leaving the basement with Kia in tow, for picture taking, I noticed my two Tonner Convention dolls in the glass cabinet.  With all the FR Convention talk going on, I started reminiscing about the one and only doll convention I attended back in 2006.  It was held here in Atlanta.

At the time I was collecting 16" dolls, too.  I bought two of the dolls.  This doll is so beautiful when displayed.   Of course, I have never displayed mine, as you can see.  I just remember what she looked like at that convention.  What a shame!  if I don't sell her, I will have to pull her out of this box.

This was the convention doll.  Again, another beauty when displayed.  The dress is amazing.  I was able to get Robert Tonner to sign this doll.  He signed her on her derriere, and he signed the certificate.  This is Summer Concerto Sydney Chase.

In the same glass case were 16" shoes I bought for my dolls.  Seeing the shoes made me want to go make some 16" outfits.  NO, Vanessa.  I think I have come to my senses and decided against sewing for the big girls.

I can still remember how elated I was to buy these boots.

What did I learn from this post?  I need to stay out of the basement.   Have a wonderfully, glorious day!

    1. Verona - Thanks! Kia still makes me smile. Those 16" dolls can get you. So funny how they look so small when you are at one of their doll shows. Then you get them home and it's like, wow, you sure are a big doll.

    1. Male Doll World - Thanks. I was looking for the black dolls name but the box top and certificate were not with her. I have to look again. I was pressed for time.

  4. Going to pretend that I did not see these dolls.

Do NOT need another scale to long for, lol.

Thanks for sharing though. Lovely dolls and super accessories!

    1. D7ana - I completely understand. When you put all the 16" dolls together, they really don't seem that big. It's when you throw a Barbie in the mix and it's like, woah! I think sewing for them would be wonderful.

  5. Kia is beau-ti-ful! If she were not porcelain, I'd want her.

What is it that you cannot do doll-wise, Vanessa? Tell me please. It seems that everything you put your hands on in doll world turns to gold.

Those Tonner shoes are extremely nice!

In your absence, I will answer MDW's question. The black Tonner doll is Dinner with Russell Esme. You can see her headshot with Russell here.

    1. DBG - First, I will say thanks for the info about Esme. I'm not sure why her box top was not in the cabinet with her. Probably because I had every intention on deboxing her by now.

I do feel blessed to have the desire to learn and do as much as I possibly can.

Can you believe those shoes have yet to touch a doll's foot? For shame!

  6. Hello from Spain: a big doll like a real girl. You are very talented. What envy when you shop at the convention of 2006. The black boots are gorgeous ... You have to go more often to your basement and show all your treasures ... Keep in touch

    1. Marta - Thanks! I have lots of big creations in the basement. I've considered moving my doll world back down there. I really feel happy around the dolls that are still living there.

    1. Matty - Thanks! I only have about 6 16" Tonner dolls. I do own about 10 or so Gene dolls. It's so easy to get sucked into collecting them. There are some real beauties out there.

  9. she is so lovely & you are so talented! I too, have a collection of big girls- I have two porcelains, Big Amanda doll and Big Rebecca doll dressed in antique 100 year old toddler dresses with hats and boots, they are displayed in my dining room, along with the American Girl dolls and their scenes. sigh...that's why i ahve devoted myself to the 12 inch girls....not enough room!

    1. Lisa - Wow. I am not familiar with those two dolls, but I can only imagine how beautiful they are in those dresses. Those American Girl scenes must take up crazy room. Even with just the 12 ins, they seem to just take over a space.

  11. I love Kia's wig! The boots are also awesome. You need to let one of the big girls put them on and strut around. I don't have any 16" dolls because they would take up too much space but I think that sewing for them would be a dream. Thanks for sharing your convention beauties.

  12. So going in the basement got you totally sidetracked huh? Love Kia's hair, and I'd wear those boots today! Nice. So what does one do with a 16 inch doll?

    1. Kenya - Going anywhere in my house or garage gets me sidetracked. I went to the garage to get the swiffer so I could mop the dining room floor. Saw the scroll saw before I got to the swiffer and made a quick table. It's an ongoing dilemma. People do the same thing with 16" dolls that they do with 12" dolls, but they just take up a lot more space.

  13. Probably would be easier ... I once-upon-a-time sewed for my Crissy and Kerry dolls - 17" they were.

  14. hehehehe Your basement is like a treasure island! You have many big beauties down there. Kia is just gorgeous, I love her wig! And the two tonners look awesome, I have never seen one and I've always been curious about their scale and features.

    1. Rossetti - I will have to do a 16" to 12" comparison post soon. I'm thinking about moving all of Morristown to the basement. It really is the perfect place for it.

  15. Kia’s hair looks cool! I like its hair color and style. It really goes well with her outfit and skin tone. Likewise, your 16’’ dolls look stunning with their dresses. The one on the left has a modern, sexy gaze, while the one on the right has a more traditional look but still carries itself with elegance.
