Grocery Store Food

I have a grocery store story and a dinner story coming up, so I was inspired to make new food.  I started with a few new items to put in the grocery store

I started with watermelon.  Whole ones and pieces to put in the grocery store.  The really small pieces will be used in dioramas.  All the store pieces have been wrapped in plastic and stocked on the shelves.

Putting in the seeds took a while, but proved to be therapeutic.

These are gala apples.  How do I know that?  Because that's what was in my refrigerator.  I sculpt from real food as much as possible.  Once I finished with the sculpt, I got to eat the fruit.  I had a banana on the working table too, but I ate it before I had a chance to make any.  Next time.

These are cucumbers.  They look a little beat up.  Just like the ones at my local farmer's market.

Onion is one of the staples of cooking, so the store was in desperate need of some.

Racquel may need to take a trip back to the store before she cooks dinner for her mom.  They were out of onions the day she went shopping.

These are pork loin chops.  They were supposed to be pork chops, but I couldn't get them the way I wanted them.  I haven't eaten pork chops since I was a kid, and pictures weren't helping me.  So I will have to buy and cook some in order to get it right.  There's been a request for pork chops in the Etsy store.  Hang in there CW.  I'm working on it.

These are shoestring fries.  My favorite.  When there is nothing I want to eat, I got to Kroger, spend $1.28 on a bag of their frozen fries, and I will be good for a few days.

I made these with an air dry clay.  It was my first time making food with air dry clay.  In the past I've only used it for landscaping purposes.

A new sofa will be hitting the Etsy store this week.  I guess I will go do my story now.  See you soon.

    1. Drora - Thanks. Since I don't make my doll's furniture too often, I have to make it up to them by giving them good food.

    1. Ms. Leo - Thanks. Has anyone ever told you, you were a pro at guiding people's actions through your suggestions? I had no plans for a cookout, but now you have planted the idea.

  7. Oh now my crew is nagging me for watermelon ... especially since we'll be having temp in the 90s this week. (Yes, it's too early by me, too. Sigh.)

Fries would be great to have on hand, too, for those times when you want something quick and yummy. I love shoestring fries ....

  8. Duke of Swann, DBG, jewel snake and Verona - Thanks!

Sergio - I agree. Watermelon is the perfect summer fruit. So refreshing.

D7ana - Wow, you guys are warmer than we are. I think you and I have similar food taste. Once I figured out I could bake them and still have them crispy, I was a happy camper.

  11. Your grocery store is getting very well stocked - but where are the carrots? Aren't they a staple too?

  12. Debbie - Thanks. Let's just say I was in a food mood. I made more than this, but the rest aren't camera ready.

mustiwait - Thanks. I will let you know when I schedule those classes.

Carrickters - Carrots aren't a staple in my cooking, BUT they are coming. I have some in the refrigerator and like most of the carrots I buy, they are going bad. I always think I am going to use them, but rarely do.

  13. Everything looks so fresh! I was looking at a play set at Target that has the little squirrels or monks or whatever in a bakery and I remember thinking, "I bet Vanessa could make this stuff."

    Yep. You totally could.

    1. Muff - What playset was that? I can't picture squirrels or monks in a bakery.

    2. They were called Woodies or something like that. There were 2 sets, one a bakery and the other was like a general store over. They were where they keep the LaLaLoopsies. It was for little animals, about the size of Blythes. They were either chipmonks or squirrels. But the food inside could have been used for 1:6 scale.

    3. Thanks, Muff. I will take a look next time.

  15. The watermelon looks so real- did you do a cane then slice in half? I love how the seeds are done in it. I used to make alot of miniature food and miss it. Model magic works great for breads, donuts and cakes- it looks like the flour in the bread, etc. I have been wanting to do a fresh market stand for Barbietown but have put it off- your foods are so realistic looking!

    1. Lisa - Thanks! I'm not the typical polymer clay food maker. I don't really do canes. I've done a few but don't really care for it. I treat food making more like sculpting. I don't have set techniques or color combos. I just look at the real thing and recreate it. I'm sure the people in Barbietown are wondering where their fresh market stand is.

  16. They look really yummy! Do you use fimo to do them? I love the watermelons, the will do great in summer dios! Here in the south of Spain it's typical to take a watermelon to the beach, bury it on the shore, near the waterline (so that it keeps cool and fresh) and eat it after lunch.

    1. Rossetti - Thanks. I mostly use Fimo and Premo. I guess I better dust off the picnic tables. Ms. Leo has me planning a summer bbq/picnic.

    1. Roville - Thanks. The preliminary store opened in mid May. I have a lot of work left to do with signage, painting of store fixtures, getting rid of all the fake fruits and veggies, etc. It's a little lame at the moment. It will be an ongoing project, but you can see the start of it here. http://vansdolltreasures.blogspot.com/2012/05/grocery-store-is-now-open.html
