Inside the Miniature House

Happy belated Mother's Day to all the moms out there.  I wanted to post yesterday, but my internet was acting up because of the storm we had.  My company has left, so I can get back to life as I know it.  It was wonderful visiting with family.  I needed that little mini break.

Back in February, I did a post on a miniature house I had in my basement.  This weekend with the help of my brother, I moved it into Morristown.  I plan to finally do a miniature house.  In my previous attempts, I was too impatient to do it correctly..  This time I will take my time and go step by step.

Here is the inside.  It has a total of 7 rooms and a couple of hallways.

I have no idea what style I am going for, or what each room will be.  Some of them are obvious, but there is a lot of leeway to be creative.

The first step will be the wiring.  I took a miniature wiring class a number of years ago.  The gentleman at the local dollhouse shop told me I could audit another course just for a refresher.  I may take him up on that.   Lights can be expensive.  I am thinking about making my own.

After wiring will be picking out the wallpapers.  I have a few miniature wallpapers in my stash.  I will get creative and use some of the same type items I use for the fashion doll dioramas to keep the cost down.

Then comes the fun part.  Furniture and accessories!  Let's hope I haven't pitched it out the window by time I get to this part of the project.

Don't worry.  The fashion dolls will continue to take center stage.  This house will be worked on in my spare time or when I get bored with the other stuff.

Here is a picture of the outside in case you missed the original post.

I will catch up on blog reading before tomorrow, if my internet connection stops acting crazy.

  2. I'd love to hear updates about your dollhouse! I have a similar one. Mine has 5 rooms and a large attic, though.

  3. Hello from Spain: I have a house very similar to yours Victorian style. I have it empty because at this point in my life I prefer the scale of barbies. I look forward to your work with this house because it is sure to copy some decorating ideas. I love doll houses. I see you had a storm ... keep in touch.

  4. Rossetti - I feel I have a lot more patience to tackle such a project. Fingers crossed I am able to do a nice job.

Johanna - I am sure I will occasionally post some updates here. If I really get into it, I may do a temporary miniature blog until the house it finished.

Marta - I figured you had a miniature house because of all the miniature furniture you use in your Barbie dios. I, too, prefer Barbie size, but doing a house has been on my list since 1995. It's time I finally tackled it.

  9. I was looking at a miniature house last weekend. It was 50% off at the hobby lobby near my home. I was sooo... tempted to buy it, but Barbie takes all my money. I went to the doll house shop in lawrenceville a few weeks ago and don't think I can afford both hobbies right now. However, I guess I could do like you and just keep it until I'm ready to work on it. Something to think about...thanks for sharing.

  10. I can have 1:12 scale enjoyment vicariously through your posts. Plus, it will give me ideas for some 1:6 settings ;-D

  11. I have always wanted to do a dollhouse, but being this deep in the doll game, I'm not sure if I can still do it. I do look forward to seeing what you do with this one...I know it will be nice!

  12. Can't wait to see what you'll do with the house, especially if you really decide to go ahead with the wiring/lighting! The exterior sure is pretty!

  13. Hegemony - I really lucked out on this house. It was the deal of my lifetime. It came just as shown, already put together. My other miniature dollhouses required assembly. I rarely got beyond that point before I gave up on the project.

Verona - That is funny. I guess I have reached that grandma age, where I would probably not let my grandchildren play with it either. LOL! Funny how we change with time.

Loretta - I am looking forward to this house project. I feel I have a lot more skills since attempting to do one many years ago. Not to mention all the information available through the blogs. Hope you and James are doing well. I will visit soon.

mustiwait - I wish I could ship it to you and let you do the wiring. All the prep work is done with the dremel. I know how much you love working with the dremel.

veda - Was it already assembled? If so, I say it's worth buying and putting aside until later. If not assembled, I say leave it where it is until you are really ready to do it. The first house I bought is still in the box unassembled. I did manage to get the porch together, but that was it. It is a very expensive hobby if you buy everything from the miniature doll stores. I plan to make a lot of the furniture and accessories. I even have miniature doll molds where I can make the family. Not sure that I will do that, though.

D7ana - I don't blame you. Working in multiple scales is not fun. This house is pretty enough that I am willing to put in some effort.

Georgia Girl - We can only hope that it will be nice. I am not making any promises. I think if I take it room by room instead of jumping all over the house, I will be able to tackle it better.

In A Dolly's World - I have to wire it, otherwise, I won't do it at all. I have one in the basement that I assembled and started, but didn't finish yet. That one doesn't have lights and I vowed never to do that again.

limbe dolls - I think a head examining is in order.

  14. Yes Vanessa. It was assembled. I look at it every time I go in the store. It's so pretty.. red exterior with yellow and white trim I think. I might go by there today and see if its still there. Thanks.and good luck with yours!

    1. Veda - Yes, I know that house. I almost had that house and this house. Thank goodness I don't. If it's still there, I say buy it! That house will go for up to 10x what they are probably selling it for in Hobby Lobby.

  15. Okay, I hadn't read this post yet. Skip doing a story with big headed dolls. You are right, there is no time for that, lol. Looking forward to seeing your progress with this house.

    1. Muff - Whew! Thanks for giving me a pass on the big headed dolls. By the way, I went to Marshall's and found the bottle stopper that you have. I went to TJMaxx, too. They had that one and another one with a single bottle in it.
