Battle of the Fashionista Bodies (Doll Nudity)

I was compelled to do this post after getting comments about how much better the original fashionista body is compared to the new 2012 body.  Sorry for the shadowy pictures. Morristown has grown so much, that my picture taking area was taken over by the local hotel.  I have yet to locate a new photo studio.  I may have to hire one of the local real estae agents to help me out.

Sylvia, Model 8, has the original Artsy body. Halle Berry is sporting the "new" 2012 fashionista body.

"So the first thing is to sit like a lady.  I said a lady, not a dude." (Halle)
"Oh. sorry." (Sylvia)

"How's this?" (Sylvia)
"You look awkard.  Is that the best you can do?" (Halle)
"Pretty much." (Sylvia)

"Well let's try something similar on the floor.  Maybe the chair was hindering you.  So when I go on nice romantic picnics, I like to look dainty as my date is feeding me chocolate covered strawberries.  But I digress." (Halle)
"Hmmm.  This is as dainty as I can get."(Sylvia)

"What about a yoga pose?  Not bad. You need to work on your flexibility, though." (Halle)

"Now cross your legs." (Halle)
"Wait. Darn. Why can't I do that?" (Sylvia)
"Let's move on." (Halle)

"But can you do this?!" (Sylvia)
"I'm a lady, not a stripper.  Why would I need to do that?" (Halle)
"I don't know.  Doesn't everyone need to be able to do a split?" (Sylvia)

"Granted, I can only open my legs this wide, but I really don't think I need them to open any wider.  But for the sake of the battle, I will give you this one." (Halle)

"But check this out.  I can stand without one of those crazy doll stands.  Heyyyy, Hooo." (Sylvia)

"Big whoop.  I can do that, too." (Halle)
"What? You can stand without a doll stand!  Darn, I thought for sure I would win that one." (Sylvia)
"By the way, close your legs, I think we now have an audience." (Halle)

SO THE WINNER, HANDS DOWN, SKINNY KNEES AND ALL IS.......
FASHIONISTA 2012. (crowd cheers)
"How did she do that knee thing again." (Sylvia)

"Can you show me how to do that knee thing?" (Sylvia)
"Girl, I don't think you can do it with that body." (Halle)

This is the second post of the day.  You can see the first one about sock sweaters here.

  1. Funny and informative! Way to go. What I love about your posts, Vanessa. Poor Sylvia. Halle was brutal. (She cracked me up, but still. Sooo plain-spoken and direct. LOL)

Thanks for this second post further exploring the differences between the two Fashionista bodies.

BTW, Old Joe says he prefers Sylvia's poses more. Tsk. He doesn't care for "ladylike." Naughty Joe.

  2. That is one thing I like about the newer fashionista is that their knees swivel. I wish Liv bodies had knees like that.

  3. D7ana - I'm sure Joe has seen his fair share of women doing splits. Maybe when he gets taller, oops, I mean older, he will appreciate a good lady. Poor Sylvia took it all in good stride.

Hey Its Muff - That was the only thing I liked about the swapping head bodies. I think Mattel took the best of version 1 and version 2 then they created the new body. It is the best for me when it comes to realistic poses for stories.

  4. I did a post about this last year because the new knees got on my nerves!

  5. EbonyNicole - Yes, I think there were a lot of people that didn't like the knees on the 2nd Fashionista body. Something about them being weak. I think the knees on this 3rd body are better than the knees on the 2nd body.

  6. I personally like the new body! the knees are still a little weak but not as bad as the past models. I too think Mattel should create different skin tones so we can rebody our favorite dolls with the right skin color! Now if they would take a clue and make all their male dolls the same way we would be in buisness!!

  7. william - I agree that those male fashionista bodies need some work. I haven't seen the new ones in person, but I've been told that they still can't "sit like a dude". I have 3 of those bodies and they are just sitting in the excess body box.

  8. LOL, cool post! You definitely have a good body with Ms Halle. I personally, prefer the older body but I do like the way the new knees sit. The cheapness of the new body, really bug me.

I've read a few posts on flickr about the same broken leg issue that I have in one of my Nikki/Artsy bodies just purchased a few weeks ago. I also, don't like the way the knees come is really skinny. Looks a lil' weird to me. :(

  9. Tracy - Sylvia went down swinging, but she did go down. Ever since I discovered the posing possiblities with the knees, I haven't looked back. When I did the "Nikki Entertains the Ladies" story and the lady with the knees was able to sit on the sofa with her knees to the side, I was in love. It was so realistic. Probably because I always find myself sitting like that. I personally have never had any quality issues with any of my articulated bodies, even the swapping styles. I think you should take that body back and get a new one.

  10. Hahahahaha...too funny!! I still like the old bodies though. So far the 2nd and 3rd gen bodies I have all have floppy knees right out of the box. So they still don't get any love from me. I just don't like floppy bodies, a pet peeve of mine. (Probably as much as you don't like those big heads.)
Well I will gladly accept 1st gen body donations! :)

  11. mrscarissa - I guess until a person needs those knees to go to the side, they can't really appreciate it. It sure has come in handy in my stories. I've warmed up to the big heads. If you've noticed they've even been appearing in some of the stories. I just deboxed a MyScene Madison and I'm trying to figure out how I can use her. She is beautiful.

  12. Love the way you made a funny character sketch out of the comparison photos! Thanks for explaining the pivotal body but I prefer dolls that can twist at the waist.

  13. I agree with D7ana, Funny and informative! That is hard to do but you did it girl! I haven't purchased any of the new bodies but I will have to give them a look now. There you go again, making people buy more dolls!

  14. Hello from Spain: I prefer new 2012 body. The body that has Halle Berry is better for dioramas. It contributes more realism. I congratulate to you to compare bodies both. Very good information. At the moment I prefer the very thin bodies… although doll seems that it has feeding problems, ja, ja, ja… we followed in contacto of blog blog

  15. limbe dolls - Waist benders are great! I have a few of those and would you believe I never remember to bend their waists.

Ms. Leo - Thanks. You know how much I hate being an enabler. Hee Hee. I am sitting here with my $100 Integrity doll in my hand and she has the same knees as the new Fashionistas. I can twirl her knees all the way around. So when I can get that for $12, I am on it.

Marta - You are so right. For dios and stories that body is perfect. I like the proportions on the new body. Not too big and not too skinny. Just enough curve to make her "feel like a woman".

  16. Great dialogue, funny but very informative. Halle's body is more graceful.

Two of my original Fashionistas are displayed in a seated (on the top of a shelf), crossed-legs-at-the-knees position with the lower legs extended. One of the Swappin' Styles dolls is seated with them, but her legs are in the same direction off to the side away from her body with one on top of the other. It's a more graceful seated pose that the original dolls cannot assume.

  17. DBG - Thanks. Graceful. That's the word I needed. Pivotal body and graceful legs equals a winner for me.

  18. I giggled through this! Amazing how articulated? they are. Did I use it right? You taught me that doll word ;-) I loved Halle saying "Big whoop".

    ReplyDelete
  19. Kenya - Yes, articulated is the word. You better watch out. You may find yourself trying to buy a doll soon. Doesn't 'big whoop' sound like something Halle Kenya Berry would say? LOL! By the way, the next video will have your man Darius, his new woman, and you (I mean Halle) in it. Should be interesting.

  20. This was hilarious. I have pre-swap Fashionista bodies with the new knee. The 1st Artsy came 2 ways old/new knees. I don't mind either really just not crazy about the swapping thing. I do have a couple of the bodies w/swap heads.

I'm still chuckling over here :O)

  21. Dollz4Moi - What gets me now if that they are trying to charge double for those swapping head dolls. Yes, they gave them longer dresses, but that's it. I found out tonight that those bodies are horrible. Forget the legs, the head was loose and a little wonky.

    ReplyDelete
  22. LOL, great post!! Here in Spain we haven't been able to see the new fashionistas yet, but for sure I will buy more than one for rebodying!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rosetti - Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you like the new bodies as much as I do when you get them.

  24. Lol!!! Very good illustration. And thanks for sharing. I have taken a couple of the new fashionistas out the box, but didn't pay much attention to them. Now I need to go and check them out.

  25. Georgia Girl - Thanks. Those knees definitely help with realistic posing.

  26. Just chiming in to say that was enjoyable, hilarious and informative! For what it is worth, I would love to see Mattel come up with a combination of the two legs. I like the first legs because they aren't so skinny and the knees are strong but the second set of legs have the flexibility. I have many dolls here with the second leg version and most, though not all, are quite loose in the knee joint. What also would be great is if Mattel could make the dolls so their hands come off for ease of dressing. And while we are at it, why not make a variety of hand poses? One can dream..... :-)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Charmed Playscale - Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. All of those items you are dreaming about are available on the Fashion Royalty (FR) dolls to the tune of $100+. Removable hands are really nice. I always forget that my FR dolls have them. I always remember them on my action figure bodies though. Mattel will never be able to do that since their primary market is children. Can you see the lawsuits that would arise once some little kid choked on a hand. I only have four of the 2nd generation bodies that suppposedly had bad legs. I was lucky not to get any bad ones. I hope you will come visit again. I'm going to check now to see if you have a blog.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Vanessa. Nope, I don't have a blog....maybe one day. I had heard about the Fashion Royalty dolls, but sadly, they are not in my budget now. I do have a few FR from way back when they first came out and were more reasonably priced. I don't collect Monster High but I did read on a forum how their hands come off. So.....I just figured if Mattel can do that for the MH dolls, they could do that for the Fashionista dolls too. But maybe the MH is geared towards older children. When you think about it, there are so many small pieces like bracelets, cell phones, ipods, etc. that Barbie has that children can choke on.

You do such a fabulous job with your blog. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your blog too. It is always entertaining, informative and just plain fun! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Charmed Playscale - Yes I saw that post about the MH dolls just today. I think the difference is that it is one kit and none of the regular MH dolls have removable parts. Who knows? It will be interesting to see what they come out with next. Thanks again for enjoying my blog. I have so much fun with it.

  30. On a Facebook Group, we were discussing quality or lack thereof and while shopping at Target, I noticed a Monster High doll missing her forearm so I took a picture so I can mention/show on that group. Here I thought is a brand new doll not even out of the box and played with and already missing her arm. But someone who was familiar with MH posted and said these dolls do come apart on purpose. So....it was one of those oops moments for me since I had no idea. Lets see if this works...here is a link to the photo: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/100250394048480016354/albums/5693736737904601089/5693736739801669186

But that is what got me thinking if Mattel could make these dolls like this, then why not Barbie too?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Charmed Playscale - Thanks for the info. At this point all I would just settle fro great articulation an a multitude of skin colors. Last week as I was putting shoes on my 16" Tonner doll with removable feet, it broke. Yesterday when I was putting shoes on my new action figure his foot broke. I now have to buy him new feet. I am no longer wanting dolls with removable parts.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Two feet broke all in one week? ug Well that would be enough to change a persons mind about removable parts. I think you just changed my mind too now. I love the articulation but dressing the dolls is such a challenge. I do agree about needing a wide range of skin tones....and head molds and facial screening..... :-) You have a wonderful day!

  33. Wow great and informative, and fun, too! I was going to buy one of the fashionistas (still don't own one), and your post gave me a right idea which edition to take :D

    1. KoraSewings - Thanks for visiting my blog. Make sure you don't get one of the swapping heads body. That was the first rendition with the knees that had more flexibility, but there seemed to be some quality issues with those. As a person who does stories and a lot of doll posing, that flexible knee thing has come in handy more times than I can count. Good luck.

  35. I have a question about finding the perfect body for the My Scene dolls. I just started collecting but I would like to take my Chelsea head add her to a bendable body which is the best to match up perfectly so they don't have an way over sized head. lol I would appreciate your knowledge thanks in advance :)
