I Was Up All Night Baking Cakes

Last week I decided there wouldn't be food at the Daddy/Daughter dance.  Of course this decision was made because I was feeling a little overwhelmed with everything that I was trying to get done.  Late last night I pulled out the clay and got busy.   I decided to try my hand at making some cakes.  This was my first time trying a new technique.  I didn't quite master it, but I am happy with my first attempt.  I am pretty happy with the way the strawberries turned out.  Not bad for 3am.  I particularly like the little leaf because I went from "how in the heck do you make the little leaf?" to what you see in the picture within minutes.  The strawberry leaf angels helped me out with that one.

Just a picture with Danielle to show scale.  There you can see a couple of the other cakes. I forgot to make a chocolate one.  I will probably make brownies instead.

So, there will be food at the Daddy/Daughter dance.  I am still working on the menu.  I need kid friendly food that will not stain those pretty little dresses.  Feel free to make suggestions of things you would like to see on the menu.  I can't promise that I will make it, but I will at least consider it.

  1. The desserts all look so yummy! I want to taste test, but I guess I'd better not. We just finished off a German chocolate cake and carrot cake from Father's Day and I'm not e-ven supposed to eat that stuff.

I don't have any menu suggestions for kid-friendly foods except maybe finger sandwiches, chips, and clear punch (red stuff stains).

  2. Fruit pizza? Pineapples and strawberries and candied fruits on a cream cheese frosting, cookie "crust?"

Fresh fruit? Some kids might eat celery stalks with peanut butter? Sigh. But PB is sooo messy on dresses.

Trying for kid-friendly plus party plus fancy dresses ....

  3. D7ana - Keep trying... Maybe I will do some fruit cups, or a fruit salad. I haven't met too many kids that like fruit on their pizza.

  5. Great job on the cakes. How about jello jigglers. (Jello cut into different shapes).

  6. Frannie - Jello is a cool idea. I've never made it before, but I will look into it. But as I am thinking about it...jello is so jiggly won't the kids be dropping that on those cute outfits? Hmmm. I predict a little mess.

  7. pigs in a blanket was always a favorite of my son's. Even til this day & he's now 17 & a high school graduate! My nephew loves chicken fingers. & some kids like the chese strings & cubes. & I have noticed that alot of little kids are now eating apple slices. Hope that helps, if I think of anything else I'll let you know. I'm surrounded by 2 - 9 yr olds in my family!

  9. MsLydiaT - We think alike. Everything that you mentioned is already on the menu. Except for the cheese string, I was going to do mozzarella sticks. I didn't want to reveal my list because I wanted to see what goodies people would come up with. Thanks for the tips. You are welcome to swing by and help in the kitchen. LOL!

  10. MsLydiaT - There will be no white grapes. They will be eating those green and purple grapes I made months ago.

  11. The cakes look scrumptious! Raw veggies and hummus dip might also work. You could use some of the broccoli you made for the beach trip.

  12. limbe dolls - Thanks. I like the raw veggie idea. I did have carrot sticks, cucumbers, and celery in mind. I may make some new broccoli. I think I can do it better second time around. Hmmm, hummus dip! Now you've made me hungry.

  14. EbonyNicole - Trust me, that was my initial thought before I made the cakes. Of course they could just have desserts. I'm sure they won't mind.

  16. Georgia Girl - I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to make chocolate chip cookies that look lumpy and homemade. I don't think they will make the dance, but I will definitely figure that one out real soon.
