Sad Day in Morristown

"Goodbye baby Buttercup.  You will be sorely missed."

Remember Buttercup?  She was the little dog I rescued off the streets a couple years ago.  Sadly yesterday she took ill within a matter of hours and had to be put down.  It was so unexpected, which is making it so much harder.  She hadn't been even remotely ill.  She was her same perky self all day.  The vet said it was an autoimmune disorder and it wasn't anything that she ate.

She was the sweetest dog you would ever want to meet.  She loved people and always wanted to be held like a baby.  I nicknamed her 'baby' Buttercup.  She would just lay in your arms as long as you would allow.

Of the three dogs that are still here, two of them were her children.  Her daughter seems to be fine, but her son is still walking around looking for her.  He was a momma's boy and the two of them were thick as thieves.  Luckily he is really close to me, too, and I will have to give him a little more love in this time of sorrow.

    1. jewel snake - Thanks. I guess it's good that she wasn't suffering long, but she was only 4 yrs old and had so much more life to live. She led the life of a princess the past two years, so that's good.

  2. So sorry to hear of your loss. Yes, I do remember when you found Buttercup. I know that sometimes people don't understand why we get so sad over the loss of our pets, but they are truly a member of our families. It is especially hard when they go suddenly like that too. Will be thinking of you.

  7. Hugs Vanessa)))). I am very sad to hear this about your beloved Buttercup. I do remember when you rescued her and she had the puppies. I hope that her son finds comfort in you. I know you the empty space this can cause when loosing a pet...I have been there. Do something fun to take you mind away if only for a moment. RIP Buttercup...

  15. To everyone: Thanks so much for all your love and well wishes during this difficult time. I only had her 2.5 yrs, but I'm missing her like she was her for a lifetime. My heart breaks every time her son walks around the house looking for her. We will all be okay in time. Losing a pet for me is just like losing a child. It is the closest thing I've ever had to having my very own children. I'm just happy that I could give her the life of a princess for the short time she was here. She deserved it. She made so many people happy during her short little life.

    1. Tam - Sorry to hear about your baby. It is so difficult and I agree the suddenness of it all makes it harder. At least I can remember her as her happy self. Her son makes me sad because he was really close to her and he just keeps looking for her. Breaks my heart every time.

  22. Hi Vanessa, I remember when you first got her. I too had to put down my dog, Spike two weeks ago. I'm still sadden and a bit depressed. I'd had him since he was a pup and I know the feeling. I'm truly sorry for your lost.

    1. A-Lise - So sorry to hear about your loss, too. I feel your pain. It does get better with time. When I lost my dog of 19 yrs, I didn't think I would ever recover, but I did. I just can't wait for this dull ache in my heart to stop, so I can feel happiness again.

  23. I'm sorry to hear Buttercup died. I understand how much it hurts to lose a pet. Before i started college and got into dolls again, my dog Beethoven died. I had him since i was three and i treated him like he was my brother. It took me months to get over his death but i still cry sometimes when i hear or see his name. I hope you and Buttercup's babies will feel better soon.

    1. Leandra - Beethoven, I love that name for a dog. It's so painful when they leave us, but they bring so much joy to our lives. I keep remembering the phrase, "Tis better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved."

  24. Thanks again to all of your wonderful sentiments. Petey and I are still working through our depression. The other two dogs are doing just fine. I hope to get a story done real soon. I have been swamped with orders in and out of my Etsy shop, which is good because it keeps me busy. Hopefully tomorrow I will have a new doll related post up.

  26. I too remember when you rescued Buttercup and then she had puppies. Our pets really are part of our families and their loss is hard to deal with. There will always be a place in our hearts for our pets that have gone and we will always remember them and miss them. But you are right, we would not have missed having them in our lives just because we know they must go one day. Big hugs to you and your dogs.

    1. Muff - It never gets easier losing a pet. Petey is doing much better. The dynamics between the other three dogs is changing....for the better. Petey is closer to his sister now. They get a lot more time riding in the car with me. Their little lives have gotten a lot more exciting.
