Back To Business (Photostory)

Both Keith and I are back in business.  Keith was commissioned to do a Victorian style crib.   He has designed it, and completed cutting the wood.  He's enlisted Max (the drummer and part time carpenter) to help with a dry assemble to check out his measurements.

"So is this crib for you and Vanessa?"  (Max)
"Naw.  This is for the Burkes.  They ordered a crib, but some mix up happened and their crib never got delivered.  So they asked me if I would make them one."  (Keith)

"You got it, man?"  (Keith)
"Yeah.  I just want to make sure it doesn't fall."  (Max)

"Looks like I have to cut a piece off the bottom.  Let's push it back against the wall, so I can be sure." (Keith)

"Nice work, man."  (Max)
"Thanks.  I still have to add the caps across the top and on all three sides, but I'll work on that tomorrow.  Let's just push it back in the corner for now."  (Keith)

"Thanks, man.  I appreciate your help."  (Keith)

"Let me know if you need help again.  Right now I'm helping with a kitchen remodel, but I have time in the evenings. "  (Max)
"Okay.  I'll do that.  You hungry?  You're welcome to join us for dinner."  (Keith)
"Thanks, but I got to go meet my girl."  (Max)

Thrift Store Find

One of mom's latest thrift store finds.  It's a really deep closet that will come in handy.  It's perfect for Keith's makeshift workshop, but I'm sure I'll find other uses for it, too.

COMPUIER UPDATE:
Well, I got a new computer yesterday.  Right now I am working on the old one, which has worked much better since the new one has arrived.  I've been planning to replace this computer for a couple of years now, so no love lost.  I will NEVER buy another Gateway computer.  Anyway, I wasn't thrilled with the idea of having a Windows 8 computer, but I have to admit, it's pretty nice.  Seems like a number of you are having, or have had computer issues.  My humble advice to you is BACKUP YOUR COMPUTER, as soon as you can.  The other thing I bought yesterday was an external hard drive.  They are reasonably priced and worth their weight in gold.  I bought a Terabyte drive on sale for $69, normally $89.  It just plugs into your USB drive and you can drag and drop everything from your computer and have it backed up.  It's so quick too!  I backed up half my computer, so far, in about 40 mins.  Incredible!  Of course if you can't get an external drive, use CDs or DVDs in the interim.  They are pretty cheap.  I picked up 50 DVDs for $9.  Just don't wait for the computer crash that takes all of your files with it.

  1. It's good to see you back in business.

I have used external hard drives for several years. The first one died on me a couple of months ago which was a gift from my son about 5 or more years ago. He purchased another one for me and was able to retrieve the info I had stored on the first one which is now on the second one.

Typically I use the external to store images because they zap your storage space, but I haven't kept that practice active. I also don't keep the external plug in. Since it's plug and play, I plug it into the USB port when I need to retrieve something from it.

All my current important files are stored on my PC, but as you've suggested, it is a very good practice to keep everything backed up somewhere. I should begin doing this at least once a month to make it routine. Big Lots price on CDs and DVDs is excellent.

Those externals come in handy when you get a new system and need to transfer files quickly from the old to the new without having to pay someone to do it.

Thank God for my son though. He's my in-house computer tech.

    1. DBG - Sounds like you have a good system in place and a great son. I was surprised that after almost 5 yrs on that computer, I had used less than 1/2 of the storage space. I had over 15,000 images on my computer. So I've decided to put all my images back on the new computer and just use the external drive as my backup system.

Congrats on getting a new computer. I need to do the same thing, but I will need to wait until later.

  3. After losing my files for the 3rd time, I finallly got it in my head to back up my files. What a relief after that! I'm glad to see your computer troubles are under control. And that closet is a really good find. Maybe I should keep my eyes more open when I go to the thrifts.

    1. Verona - Third time is always the charm. I think we all go through knowing we should back up, but not taking the time to do it. My mom is really becoming a pro at the thrift store finds.

    1. Heather - As it turned out, the old computer shut off about an hour after I made that statement. It's always had some type of power problem. Then my internet decided to act up.

  7. Vanessa I know this is totally off the wall, but where can I find good 1:12 scale doll furniture at a reasonable price? Because my mother and I our working on a dollhouse for my mini Blythe that Came with my Littlest Pet Shops and it sure is hard to find miniatures on Amazon for a realistic price.

    1. Tracey - Have you checked Etsy? In passing I've seen some really nice 1:12 shops there. If you don't have any luck, email me and I will see what I can find.

    2. Thank you I have checked etsy. I would try to buy something off there, but my mother has this thing about buying stuff off the internet. Lol

    1. Rossetti - Thanks! Don't feel bad about not backing up. We all get in that mode and don't take the time. Sometimes we all just need a friendly reminder.

    1. DeMari - Thanks. My mom is having a great time finding doll stuff. I'm familiar with Dropbox and use it to share large files with others. I have limited space on Dropbox and didn't want to pay for extra space because I'm still learning about it. I do have stuff on the cloud, which came in real handy the last time my computer crashed. I need to load more stuff to the cloud. I've been lazy about that, too. It's nice to have multiple places.

  12. Glad to see you're back in business. I was a bit concerned about the emails on the modem while at the gym. We had a friend who was texting while on the walking machine and she fell off and broke her shoulder.
The crib is looking great and that closet your mum found will be really useful.

    1. Carrickters - Don't worry. I was sitting comfortably in the tv lounge in the ladies dressing room. We have two leather chairs there, that look just like the beige leather one I made for my dolls. Right now I'm sitting in the Walmart parking lot doing my emails. I have an outlet in my car, so my modem is plugged in there. Hopefully the internet connection is working again when I get home.
