Rollerskating Kara and Growing Chelsea

I have been a deboxing fool lately.  With all the dolls I bought in the month of December, I was feeling a little boxed in.  Today, I deboxed my rollerskating Kara, who is now my Kara's older sister.   I love this girl!  I had planned to steal her body for my Kara, but she looks so good, she will keep her own body.

Here's a profile shot of her.  I took this picture right outside of Ni'Chalet's Boutique.  There is a photostory that will be posted by tomorrow.

More of a front view.  She does have a bit of a sideways glance, but it's not as severe as Trichelle's.

A view from the back.  I didn't comb or brush her hair.  I just used my fingers to lay it in place.

The body seems to be better made than the typical fashionista body.

She is happy to be able to run her fingers through her hair.

I promised Dukasha I would show how the Growing Chelsea works.
I am showing her next to a So In Style Courtney doll.

I wanted to take a moment and point out the difference between the SIS kids and the other Chelsea sized dolls.  The SIS kids have more arm and leg movement than the others.  Their arms can go up at the sides and their legs can spread out.  The arms and legs of most of the other Chelsea sized dolls can only move back and forth.

In this picture the Chelsea doll has been made larger.

Smaller Chelsea.

Larger Chelsea

  1. The growing Chelsea is a cool idea. Congrats on the new Kara, she's pretty. I'm not a fan of her mouth, it looks a bit strange to me. But, I hear she's got the hinged knees and I do like those best. I hear we may be getting a Trichelle with different makeup sometime this year. Maybe she'll have a less severe glance too.

    Nice post!

    1. Tracy - They did a good job on the growing Chelsea. It would be nice to have more of the kids able to grow. Some of the Karas have more of a smile. My has more of a smoldering look. Yes, she has hinged knees. Goodness knows I don't need any more Trichelle dolls. Hope I can resist.

  2. Oh Deboxing, deboxing! Always a glorious feeling, eh? The Growing Chelsea is cute, it reminds me of the Vintage Growing Up Skipper. I'll have to bring her out one of these days.

    1. Verona - I've never seen the growing up Skipper. I would love to see her one day.

    2. Ages ago, I had a Growing Up Ginger doll - Ginger was GU Skipper with brown hair and brown eyes. You wound her arm around and she sprouted "breasts" and like a half-inch "taller."

    3. D7ana - Thanks for posting the link. Love the concept and that Ginger doll was really cute.

  4. Hey Vanessa, your deboxed young lady is one I haven't seen...I always check out the dolls to see what's new. She's fab! The little ones will be to your advantage in a story. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Loretta - This doll came out about a month ago. She comes with a little girl and they are both roller skating. I love her. Her sister, Kara is happy to have her around now. Tell Ms. Kitty I said hello. I'm sure she's off getting into trouble.

    1. sisilovessinging - LOL! I have so many dolls, it would probably be awhile before I even noticed they were missing.

  6. Hi Vanessa,

Kara is lovely. I have one on the way, so I'll get to see how lovely she is in person soon.

Thanks for sharing yours and the little ones with us.

    1. DBG - I thought you had already received your Kara. I hope you get one you like. Some people haven't been happy with theirs.

    2. No. I didn't order when everyone else did. I held out because I was not sure I would like the mouth. But wouldn't you know it -- when I went to order one last week, Kara was sold out everywhere I looked online. One vendor's site listed the doll as a discontinued product! Ebay had them for double retail, of course. I haven't seen any locally so I purchased a loose one minus Kianna for $7.99 + shipping. I regret not having ordered from Amazon.com. You snooze, you lose.

    3. Plus, Stephen Sumner's recent Facebook comment influenced my purchase. To my comment about not being sure I liked Kara's mouth, he wrote: "Gurl, many people were [complaining] that they felt like they were buying the same dolls over and over again-so I had to do SOMEthing!"

This may also be one of the last Kara's he designed since he is no longer with Mattel.

    4. DBG - I almost hesitated because I have a Kara sitting her waiting to be sold. But when I looked and saw there were only 16 left on Amazon, I knew it was going to sell out quickly. I liked the fact that she was smiling. Mine doesn't really look like she's smiling, but I agree with Steven, having her be a little different is much better than giving her the same old face.

  7. I love that black outfit she is wearing! Which doll did that come off of?
The girls are cute...now if they can make a growing doll whose arms move more... lol

    1. Grandmommy - The top, which is really a dress I tucked under, is handmade by a local lady who sometimes sells at the local doll shows. I paired it with some leggings, and a black shawl from one of the Barbie Basic accessory packs.

  8. I love the outfit Kara is wearing and yes I finally got my new Kara I stole her body for my Tara she was sporting it in the To Protect and To Serve story. I didn't like the new Kara smile or the new hair your dolls hair looks better then mine. Cant wait to see the story!!!!!!

    1. Mustiwait - Congrats on getting Tara a body. She has on a handmade top(dress)and leggings. Go look at your Kara's hair again. Mine didn't look all that great in the box, but after working it with my fingers it was really nice.

  11. Vanessa, thanks for showning Chelsea. I also remembered the growning Skipper. :) I never had her, but I read about her. And how can your make Chelsea grow? Is there a button or something or do you just need to turn her arm like in Skipper's case?
The articulated Kara doll makes me think it's a pity I have one Kara doll already and don't need another one. The same is about the articulated Grace doll. And do other articulated SiS dolls exist? I saw only Grace and Kara on eBay and on Flickr.

    1. Dukasha - You just pull the body apart. No buttons or anything. Supposedly there are two more of the new articulated SIS dolls coming out later. Trichelle and I guess Chandra. I haven't seen pictures, yet.

  12. Good choice to allow rollerskating Kara to keep her body, she's lovely. I even like her mouth, though would probably change her lip color.

    1. Roville - I agree about the lipcolor change. I will probably tone it down a little bit. Take away some of that pink. But I like the mouth. Nice to have a change.

  13. Growing up Chelsea seems to use basically the same mechanism as the controversial growing up Skipper Mattel released in the 70s. That one developed bosoms when she grew taller.

    1. limbe dolls - No it's not the same mechanism as the Skipper doll. There aren't any buttons or winding of the arms. You just pull her apart. I just saw a picture of the Skipper that D7ana posted. Great concept.

  14. Funny idea that of the growing Chelsea! And your new doll is just awesome, I love her hair and make up, and you're right, her body looks better than the fashionistas one. I'm looking forward to your next photostory to see her in action!

  15. Hello from Spain: I have also the growing Chelsea. She is very cute. I have no SIS girls because they are not for sale in stores in my country. A pity! I really like Kara. She is very attractive. I like the dress and handbag. Keep in touch

  16. Just like Verona, I was going to say the Chelsea reminds me of my Growing Up Skipper. She's a fun doll and I'm sure your Chelsea will be the same. Kara is lovely (and will be very tempting if she ever makes it to Australia).

    1. Muff - She's a little different, which is good in my book. Changing lip color is quite easy. Her lip color is as gawdy as that skating outfit.
